Year's best for Edwards

17 July 2002

England’s triple jumping hero Jonathan Edwards prepared for Manchester 2002 in emphatic style and then declared that he could have been better.

Edwards will be aiming for gold at Manchester 2002

Edwards recorded the world's best jump this year with 17.78 metres at the IAAF Grand Prix in Stockholm this week, but afterwards he said: "I could have had an 18-plus metres tonight if I had needed it."

The world recorder holder and Olympic gold medallist beat local favourite Christian Olsson in his home town by 39 centimetres in what had been one of the most eagerly anticipated contests of the season.

Edwards was obviously pleased with the result which got him back to winning ways after a disappointing defeat by the USA’s Walter Davis in Rome last week, he said: "Tonight was great, the best I've jumped for a year.”

The British number one will now be hoping that he can win Commonwealth gold at Manchester 2002, a medal that has so far eluded him in his illustrious career.
