Walking on sunshine

23 July 2002

Steve and Cal Partington live together, train together, have been to previous Games together – and there will be only 20 minutes between their respective 20km races, which start and finish at Salford Quays here on Sunday.

The 20k race will take place around Salford Quays

The couple share the same coach, former walker Allan Callow, which can prove a bit of a problem on the actual day. Callow hasn’t yet figured out the logistics of how to help both prepare in the best possible way.

“They will need to be completely focused on their own event and to do their own thing. It gives me a bit of a problem,” he said.

The couple, who have three children, possess plenty of Games experience. This will be Steve’s fifth (highest place 7th) and Cal’s third (highest place 6th).

There is a family feel about the Isle of Man’s squad. Cal’s brother Neil Parsons competes in the shooting. General team manager Ian Harrop’s son Dane is a swimmer and so too is swimming coach Kay Batty’s son David.

Shooting dominates the 31-strong squad, with 11 competitors in this sport. “It is extremely popular on the island,” said Ian Harrop. “The Government has put a lot of money into it and there are some excellent facilities.”
