Heptathlon kicks off

The women's heptathlon event began today at 12:04 at the City of Manchester Stadium. The 100m hurdles was the first of the seven events spread over the next two days.

The results from heat 1 showed England's Kerry Jury as the clear winner. Kelly Sotherton came second for England, and Claire Thompson scooped third place for Australia. The second heat, beginning at 12:12, proved successful for Margaret Simpson of Ghana. She completed the race in 13:81 seconds to win first place and also to achieve her personal best time. Australia's Kylie Wheeler was second and also achieved her best time to date. Nicole Haynes of Canada finished third. The high jump will take place later this afternoon.
Jamieson jumps for success
The second part of the women's heptathlon event took place this afternoon at the City of Manchester Stadium. The high jump event saw success for Australia's Jane Jamieson with a height of 1.86m. This first place athlete also achieved her personal best with this result. Margaret Simpson of Ghana came a close second place with her personal best height of 1.80m. England's Julie Hollman completed the top three with a result of 1.77m. Kimberley Goodall of Guernsey came tenth in the competition but also gained her personal best height of 1.56m.
