England enjoys hammer success

26 July 2002

The women's hammer throw qualifier has taken place this afternoon but only one athlete managed the target distance of 63.00m.

Bronwyn Eagles

Bronwyn Eagles aims to go the whole distance at the Games

England's Lorraine Shaw came in first with a distance of 66.10m. New Zealand's Tasha Williams was second with a result of 62.37m with Karyne di Marco achieving third place with a distance of 62.16m for Australia.

Bronwyn Eagles, Australia's hopeful, qualified for the final in ninth place. This outcome was surprising as Eagles is one of the main favourites for a medal.

The women's hammer throw final takes place this evening, at 19.10, at the City of Manchester Stadium.
