The third element of the heptathlon event, the shotput, showed the talents of athlete Jane Jamieson. Jamieson threw a distance of 13.73m. She wowed the crowds with this performance and left the other competitors in her shadow. Jamieson has made a promising start to the Games and she will be hoping to better her performance in the 1998 Games, where she scooped the silver medal. Nicole Haynes of Canada finished the shotput in second place, with a result of 13.63m, proving that her previous knee injury does not affect her technique. Clare Thompson came in a close third with a throw of 13.37m. This was a double achievement for the Australian star as it was her personal best distance. The 200 metres saw England's Kelly Sotherton quickest in a time of 23.83 seconds earning her 997 points. Kylie Wheeler (24.27) earned 955 points and Jamieson (25.13) 855 points. Overnight Jamieson leads with a total score of 3622 followed by Wheeler (3583) and Sotherton (3521).
