The men’s decathlon is underway at the Commonwealth Stadium.

Guernsey’s Dale Garland (11.01) was the surprise victor of the men’s first decathlon heat, setting a personal best in the sprint event.

In the second heat, Cypriot Georgios Andreou (10.86) finished just ahead of Jamaican Claston Bernard.

Englishmen, Anthony Sawyer (11.17) and John Healey got out of the blocks tentatively in the absence of Dean Macey, both contributing false starts before their first heat could begin.

Andreou was just a tenth of a second outside his personal best, and goes into a first round lead with 892 points.
