Anthony Borsumato, England (49.26), Ian Weakley, Jamaica (49.38) and Matt Douglas, England (49.38) also qualify for the finals Monday 29 July.

A very pleased Elias said: “I’ve changed my approach since the AAAs as I didn’t run very well there. I wanted to really enjoy it here, soak up the atmosphere with this awesome crowd and just run as free and easy as I could.”

Borsumato, who also qualified, said: “I was in the outside lane. I couldn’t see who was inside me. I had to keep going. At the last hurdle I had a tiny glance around, and ran strong until the end. I’m happy enough with the race.”

In the second semi final English hurdler Chris Rawlinson come first in the time 49.66.

After him come Willie Smith, Namibia (49.83), Morgan Dinsdale, Jamaica (49.87) and Ashoka Jayasundra, Sri Lanka (51.02).

A relieved Rawlinson said: “Two weeks ago I would have said I was very confident but I had food poisoning last week and I wanted to see how this race would have affected me. That’s why I decided to jog the last 150 metres. I want to save myself for tomorrow evening.”
