Big guns on course for 200m final

Round 2 of the men's 200m was safely negotiated by the men tipped as contenders for the Commonwealth title.

Campbell accomplishes second in heat 2

The Bahama's Dominic Demeritte took first place in heat 1 of the competition. He completed the track in a time of 20.49 seconds to claim the fastest time out of all the athletes, not just his own group.

Cameroon's Joseph Batangdon took second place, and Welshman Christian Malcolm claimed third.

Gambian Jaysuma Saidy Ndure was sixth in heat 1 and gained a national record with his time of 21.20 seconds.

Heat 2 saw success for Namibian Frankie Fredericks. England's Darren Campbell came second with his season best time of 20.70 seconds. Canadian Joseph Jermaine claimed third.

Stephen Buckland of Mauritius won heat 3 in 20.77 seconds. England's Chris Lambert ran for second place, followed by Ioannis Markoulidis, of Cyprus, for third.

Heat 4 was led home by England's Marlon Devonish. Ghana's Abdul Aziz Zakari came second in 20.73 seconds. Third place was awarded to New Zealand's Dallas Roberts.

The men's 200m semi-final takes place at the City of Manchester Stadium tomorrow evening.
