Mick Jones throws for gold

Jonesí final winner came with a throw of 72.55m, beating silver medallist Phillip Jensen of New Zealand (69.40) by more than 4 metres.

Paul Head took the bronze throwing 68.60m, which was enough to keep the former Commonwealth Games Champion Stuart Rendell in fourth place.

Jones, who couldnít believe his luck, said: ďI knew Stuart (Rendall) was good and that he was likely to come out with something handy, 77m, 78m, but I was hoping that heíd be trying just a little too hard and if he did, Iíd take him."

"I didnít think Iíd take him with 70, I thought Iíd need 74, 75. But then, jeez, Iíve done it, with 70. Then I thought, have a nice time, relax, and 72 came out. To win it with that is amazing, Iím just overwhelmed, Iím so chuffed."

After winning Jones celebrated his gold medal with long jumper and gold winner Jonathan Edwards in front of a roaring crowd.
