Manchester got its first glimpse of Australiaís Olympic champion Cathy Freeman as she helped Australia into the womenís 4x400m final.

Freeman nearly didnít come to Manchester 2002 due to injury and her husband being seriously ill with throat cancer. But she put her worries aside for the night to help Australia (3:33.25) into second place behind Jamaica (3:31.99).

Afterwards Freeman appeared to be happy being back to what she does best, she said: ďIím so excited, I still am. Itís great, Iím having a ball.Ē

Jamaicaís Charmaine Howell remained focused on their chances of winning and played down the importance the threat of Freeman: ďWe will go out and do our best and if thatís number one then itís number one. It doesnít matter to us if Cathy Freeman is running or not.Ē

Englandís women won the other semi-final with the fastest time of the night 3:30.63. They finished 1.75 seconds ahead of Nigeria. Cameroon, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Scotland all made the final.
