Bownes destroys Jacksonís Commonwealth dream

30†July†2002

South African Shaun Bownes ran the race of his life to annihilate British hopes of glory in the 110m hurdles final.

Over the last hurdle and over the moon - Bownes takes the gold

A stunning race produced all manner of upsets in the rain soaked City of Manchester Stadium.

Crowd favourite, Colin Jackson (13.39), representing Wales, finished a narrow second after getting off to a disastrous start clattering the first hurdle. By the time Jackson had got up to full speed, the race was over, and the gold belonged to Bownes (13.35).

Bownes said. ďIím over the moon. At the eighth hurdle I realised I was in the lead and totally lost it. I looked to my left and looked to my right and there was no Colin.Ē

The silver medal means that Jackson now holds the most medals of any British athlete at major championships.

Meanwhile Englandís Damien Greaves fell at the first hurdle, leaving defending champion Tony Jarrett to bring the host nation home in fourth.

Maurice Wignall of Jamaica took the bronze in a time of (13.62).

Canadian Charles Allen was sixth with another Jamaican, Ricardo Melbourne, finishing just ahead of Scotlandís Christopher Ballie (14.73).

A disappointed Jackson said afterwards that the Greaves tumble had affected his race.

He was also unhappy with his own start: "The start was very clumsy. The track was very quick and when you have got obstacles there, you have to make adjustments."

"So I basically didn't make those adjustments. I pushed out of the blocks very hard and I got way,way too close to the first hurdle, hit it hard and that was it."
