Petitclerc takes 800m wheelchair gold

31July2002

Canada's Chantal Petitclerc took the gold medal in a final she dominated from start to finish in front of roaring crowds.

City of Manchester Stadium

The crowd roared the racers on

Gold medallist Petitclercs time was 1:52.93.

Silver went to Louise Sauvage of Australia (1:53.30) with team mate Eliza Jane Stankowich (1:54.20) winning the bronze medal.

Gold medallist Petitclerc said: I wanted to win this race really badly. I knew I had to be smart, but I knew I could do it."

"Im very happy that finally, after all these years Ive got an official gold medal. Ive waited so long, she added.

Sauvage said: I had a good race but Chantal (Petitclerc) was better on the night so Im more than happy with silver.

Its fantastic to be here and be part of the team in a full medal event. Its good weve made a bit of a difference, added the silver medallist.

Crowd favourite Tanni Grey-Thompson of Wales was cheered on by the 38,000 spectators but it just wasnt enough and Grey-Thompson crossed the line in fourth place after a tough race.

Grey-Thompson said: I was really pleased. I knew I had to go a lot faster than in the semi-final. I dont think I could have done any more, I was very nervous before the race, I was sick twice."

"The crowd support was amazing, she added.
