Badminton seeds announced
05 July 2002
The seeds for the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games have been revealed.
England are number one seeds for the title ahead of New Zealand with Scotland and Wales making third and fourth places.
The host team had a welcome boost to their preparations with Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms taking the Malaysia Open title.
New Zealand's best chance of points will come in the men's doubles with Daniel Shirley and John Gordon ranked in the top ten.
The Scots are best poised for wins in the women's doubles through Sandra Watt and Yuan Wemyss, and Russell Hogg and Kirsteen McEwan in the mixed doubles.
The Welsh will be looking to Kelly Morgan - reigning women's singles champion - and Richard Vaughan to get the team off to a winning start, with Jo Muggeridge and Felicity Gallup hopeful of scoring the third and decisive point.
Malaysia, stronger in the men's events than in the women's, are seeded fifth, so will have to face one of the top four teams in the initial round-robin group play.
The teams are expected to be put in four groups of four, with the winning team from each group playing in the semi-finals and guaranteed a medal.
Each tie will comprise five matches (1 x men's singles, 1 x women's singles, 1 x men's doubles, 1 x women's doubles, 1 x mixed doubles).
