27 July 2002

Singapore and India were both untroubled in their respective 5-0 wins over Barbados and the Seychelles.

Much to the delight of the crowd, Andre Padmore and Curwin Cherubin, of Barbados, put up a spirited performance in the men’s doubles before losing to their Singapore opponents Lee Kendrick and Khoo Kian Teck.

The Seychelles’ Ah-Wan Juliette showed determination against her women’s singles opponent, Br Meenkashi of India, despite going down in three straight games.

In the second session Malaysia and Australia won in equally one-sided contests.

In Malaysia’s 5-0 win over Nigeria, 17-year-old Ola Fagbemi surprised Wong Choong Hann once or twice and made the defending Commonwealth champion work hard to win the match in three sets.

On his performance against Ola Fagbemi he said: “I think first of all I wasn’t playing that impressively and my opponent was very good – especially in the second set.”

And on being asked about Malaysia's chances against England he added: “Tomorrow will be a very tough match for England and Malaysia. Whoever is best tomorrow will win the gold medal.”

Australia hardly broke sweat in their 5-0 win over the Maldives and will now prepare for their match against Jersey in the fourth session of Sunday’s play.
