Australia team manager predicts one gold

23 July 2002

Australia team manager Paddy Wilton insists at least one of his 12 boxers will win gold at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

Middleweight Paul Miller and bantamweight Justin Kane are the experienced members of the squad after competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and both won bronze at the last Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Wilton, who moved to Australia from Northern Ireland 35 years ago, refused to identify Australia’s main hope for gold but promised an improvement on Kuala Lumpur four years ago.

He said: “We will get one gold for sure. I have a man in mind but I can’t say who because it will not be fair. In the past he has not had the luck but it’s going to change this time.

“We will win more medals here than the last time out in the Commonwealth Games. This is the best prepared team I have known in the 30 years I have been involved in the sport in Australia.

“The team has been to France to take part in a four nations tournament and had some quality sparring with the Nigerian team in Germany before arriving in Manchester.

“They have been away for six weeks so they are ready and with every leprechaun there’s a pot of gold.”
