Clean sweep for England?

23 July 2002

England’s light-heavyweight Commonwealth champion Courtney Fry believes that England will sweep the board in boxing at Manchester 2002.

Courtney Fry

Fry is ultra-confident about Manchester 2002

Fry, 27, is confident that he’ll win a second successive Commonwealth Games gold at the MEN Arena on Saturday 3 August and he believes that all his team mates will be boxing champions at Manchester 2002.

England have an amazing record in boxing at the Commonwealth Games with 41 gold medals, nearly double the amount of their nearest rivals Canada, who have 21, but a clean sweep of all 12 gold medals would still be an incredible achievement.

Londoner Fry, believes that it is a definite possibility, he said: “There’s a great buzz around the team and everyone is getting sharper and sharper. Team manager Ian Irwin said our target is eight medals, but I would be disappointed if we all didn’t come back with 12 medals.”

The England team won four gold and two bronze medals at the 1998 Games, but Fry, who is now based in Liverpool, is convinced that they’ll do even better this time, he said: “We had to acclimatise in Kuala Lumpur, but in Manchester we are on home soil, we know the venues and this is our Games.”

Fry is considering turning pro after the Games, but is unsure because he says he loves the amateur sport so much and has even considered becoming a trainer: “After I win the gold medal, I will go out for a meal with my girlfriend and we will talk about the options” he added.
