Fink expects great gymnastics show

22 July 2002

Hartmut Fink, the International Gymnastics Federation’s technical delegate for men’s gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games, has predicted a high level of competition in Manchester.

Fink, who will oversee a team of 36 officials from 17 Commonwealth nations at the event, says that the absence of some of the sport’s traditional superpowers won’t detract from the technical quality of the gymnastics.

“The standard will vary because we do have some of the weaker countries competing, but we also have many of the strongest nations,” said Fink on Sunday.

“The battle for the gold medal in the men’s team competition will be a close one between England, Canada and Australia, but many of the other countries have some very good gymnasts - Cyprus, Nigeria and Malaysia for example.

“There will be some top performances across the board.”

Manchester is the first Commonwealth Games since the sport’s code of points, on which athletes’ performances are judged, was modified two years ago.

“The code was amended to try and separate gymnasts at the top end of the scale,” Fink explained.

“I think the scores will distribute well with some excellent performances. Athletes rise to the challenge at major competitions such as the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympics.”

Fink was also impressed with the G-MEX Centre where the gymnastics competition is being held.

“It’s a wonderful venue,” he said. “I came here in September when it was an empty shell and the transformation is remarkable.”
