Jackson, from Harrow in England was delighted with his second gold: “I am over the moon. We’re on a bit of a roll at the moment after winning gold in the team event.
“I got off to a shaky start on the floor but managed to pull it together after that,” he continued.
Australian, Philippe Rizzo made the most of Jeltkov’s error, posting his best score of the day on his sixth and final piece of apparatus, the horizontal bar, to snatch the silver medal from the Canadian.
Jackson praised the spectators at a Manchester 2002 event.
“It was really hard to concentrate with all the noise, but the crowd was brilliant. I just tried to keep myself focused.”
Team-mate Craig Heap was full of praise for Jackon’s performance: “I knew Kanukai would do it. I’ve put up with his snoring all week so I’m glad he did!"
Jackson, the 2002 European Championship vault bronze medallist, got off to a slow start, scoring 8.800pts on the floor – his lowest score of the day - to leave him ninth after the first rotation. Jeltkov moved into an early lead with 9.300pts on the vault.
Rizzo took the silver medal after registering the highest score of the day on the horizontal bar (9.500pts for a total of 53.850) while Jeltkov was left to rue his mistake on the pommel horse after finishing third on 53.650.
Rizzo commented: “I thought I was going to finish third but managed to get silver and I was very happy with my last round performance,”
“I’m happy with silver but I wanted to win gold. Nothing really went wrong but what I did in training didn’t come out today. It’s very hard to beat the English in England but full credit to Kanukai Jackson for winning.”
Jackson becomes only the second Englishman ever to win the Commonwealth all-around title, the first being Neil Thomas in 1994.
