Double gold for Australian gymnasts

29 July 2002

Allana Slater and Phillipe Rizzo won gold for Australia while England's Beth Tweddle and Canada's Kyle Shewfelt were also celebrating victory.

Meanwhile an amazing result on the rings saw Herodotos Giorgallas and Steve Frew share the gold medal spot.

Men's floor

Canada’s Kyle Shewfelt has claimed gymnastics gold in the men’s floor final at the G-MEX.

Shewfelt’s assured performance scoring 9.637 was easily enough to win ahead of Malaysia’s Shu Wai Ng and Phillipe Rizzo of Australia who took silver and bronze respectively.

England’s Kanukai Jackson fell during his routine and placed 7th. Fellow Englishman Cuong Thoong fared better finishing in fifth with 8.775.

Men's floor result:

1 Kyle Shewfelt (CAN) - 9637
3 Wai Ng (MAS) – 9.300
3 Philippe Rizzo (AUS) – 9.225

Women's vault

Next up was the women's vault and Allana Slater of Australia dismissed any disappointment she may have had over yesterday's individual bronze medal with two high-quality vaults.

Slater finished ahead of fellow Aussie Alexandra Croak (silver) and Canadian Vanessa Meloche who finished with the bronze after pushing women's individual winner Kate Richardson (CAN) to fourth with the final vault of the event.

Women's vault result:
1 Allana Slater (AUS) - 9.268
2 Alexandra Croak (AUS) - 9.099
3 Vanessa Meloche (CAN) - 9.093

Men's pommel horse

In the men's pommel horse final Phillipe Rizzo's mistake at the end of a difficult routine wasn't enough to cost him the gold medal as he pushed England's Kanukai Jackson into second place.

Malaysian Yik Saing Loke's fine effort was enough to secure him the bronze.

Men's pommel horse result:
1 Phillipe Rizzo (AUS) - 9.162
2 Kanukai Jackson (ENG) - 9.087
3 Yik Saing Loke (MAS) - 9.062

Women's uneven bars

The loudest cheer of the gymnastics competition greeted Beth Tweddle's score as the local teenager won gold on the uneven bars to add to the two silvers she's already picked up at the Games.

The standard of the final was high with Australians Alexandra Croak and Allana Slater scoring well along with Canadian Vanessa Meloche.

Tweddle though rose to the challenge and the European bronze medallist put in a near-faultless performance to win the competition.

Women's uneven bars result:
1 Beth Tweddle (ENG) - 9.550
2 Allana Slater (AUS) - 9.537
3 Vanessa Meloche (CAN) - 9.337

Rings

A remarkable last performance by Scotland's Steve Frew saw him share the gold with Cyprus' Herodotos Giorgallas.

David Myhill (RSA) was relegated down to bronze position with no silver being awarded under such circumstances.

Men's rings result:
1 Herodotos Giorgallas (CYP) - 9.462
1 Steve Frew (SCO) - 9.462
3 David Myhill - 9.412
