South Africans thrash Malaysia

26 July 2002

A much stronger South African team crushed a youthful Malaysia 11-0 in their opening women’s pool 1 match.

South Africa v Malaysia

South Africa slot another goal past the Malaysian keeper

Pietie Coetzee and Sophie Mayer, both hat-trick scorers, led their team to victory with the other goals coming from Susan Wessels (2), Jennifer Wilson (2) and Lindsey Carlisle.

The South Africans dominated throughout and left for half-time with an already impressive 8-0 scoreline.

Lisa Ludong missed a couple of second-half chances for Malaysia, much to the disappointment of the crowd who were cheering for the underdog as the score piled up against them.

Malaysia, late replacements for Jamaica, were no match for their opponents.

With several teenagers in their side, their inexperience was shown up by the South Africans who looked a much better team than the one which failed to reach the last four at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

On this evidence, it looks as if Australia and South Africa will be the teams fighting to finish top of pool 1.
