England grab draw with New Zealand

26 July 2002

England came from behind to earn a more than creditable draw against New Zealand in the women’s hockey pool 2 match this afternoon.

England v New Zealand

England earned their draw against New Zealand at Belle Vue

Having taken an early lead through Helen Grant two dramatic mistakes allowed New Zealand, who consistently looked capable of scoring, to take the lead with goals by Roberts-Lang and Michelle Turner

England however kept applying pressure and sneaked the equaliser they deserved towards the end from a penalty corner scored by Mel Clewlow in the 55th minute.

England coach Tricia Herberle said: “The biggest lesson we’ve learnt is that we can compete with a team like New Zealand and possibly beat them on our day.”

“I didn’t think we played well today. I thought we were quite patchy but I’m very happy we got a point from a quality team like New Zealand.”
