Kookaburras thrash New Zealand

27 July 2002

Australia stamped their authority on the men’s hockey competition with a crushing 6-1 win over New Zealand.

Troy Elder

Australia's Troy Elder scored two goals

Despite New Zealand’s Hayden Shaw rocking the favourites with a goal after 20 minutes from a short corner, Australia responded just a minute later with an equaliser by Matt Smith.

Dion Gosling worked overtime in the New Zealand defence and for a while they matched their opponents, especially in mid-field where they knocked the ball about well.

Australia went ahead though in the 33rd minute with a beautifully constructed goal that ripped the New Zealanders apart. Matt Smith to Jamie Dwyer and then to Craig Victory to make the score 2-1.

Australia dominated the second half with Troy Elder scoring from a short corner in the 47th minute and then turning in a free hit from Matthew Wells on the hour to put the Aussies in complete command.

New Zealand started to fall apart in face of Australia’s relentless pressure. Craig Victory turned in Ben Taylor’s cross and Brent Livermore converted a penalty flick five minutes from the end to give the champions their handsome 6-1 win.

Ryan Archibald, New Zealand midfielder said: “Australia were a pace ahead of us but we are still in the tournament.”

“It was tight in the first half but one of the strengths of this team is the relentless way they put opponents under pressure and this is what they did,” Australia's coach Ray Dorsett said.
