Canada hockey women win 7th place

01 August 2002

Canada claimed 7th place after a convincing 5-0 win over the young Malaysian side on Thursday 1 August.

Early exchanges were equally matched with Malaysia looking more likely to open proceedings, but it was their opponents who went ahead in the 11th minute with a goal from Kristen Taunton.

Goals in the 24th and 27th minutes from Jenny Johnson and Aoibhinn Grimes ensured that the Canadians left for half-time 3-0 ahead.

Canada’s domination continued in the second half as Sue Tingley scored twice in the closing minutes to make it 5-0.

The crowd were unable to boost Malaysia and they will leave Manchester without scoring a single goal in the competition.

About Malaysia’s very young team, captain Nor Saliza Soobni said: “This is our first big competition. We are too young to do any better.

“Our average age is 17 and there are only four who are 22. We have no experience as we were only formed three months ago, which was too late for proper preparation.”

“Our target is the Asian Games in 2006,” she added.

Canada’s Meggan Hunt, who needed 25 stitches after being hit on the head during Monday’s defeat by New Zealand, vocally supported her teammates from the bench.
