England stun Australia in hockey semi

Englandís womenís hockey team scored a mighty upset against the favourites Australia in the soaking conditions at Belle Vue to join India in the final to challenge for the gold.

England v New Zealand

England can now look forward to the final

India had already reached the final with a thrilling 2-1 victory over New Zealand earlier in the day and will now be relishing the clash with the English.

England took a shock lead from a penalty corner from local girl Kate Walsh and eight minutes later added a second through Jane Smith.

In the 28th minute Australiaís Louise Dobson saw her penalty stroke saved and despite upping the tempo never really looked like getting back into the first half.

In the second half Australia began to dominate and press for a goal but it was the dying minutes of the match before they managed to get the score back to 2-1.

This signalled a frantic and at times desperate final three minutes with Australia camped around the England net forcing them to defend valiantly from a string of long corners.

Relief was obvious to see at the end as the England bench rushed onto the pitch to congratulate each other. The celebrations will continue long into the night for the home fans but the English women must now prepare for a touch final on Saturday at Belle Vue.
