Scots judo medal hope Buchanan bows out

30 July 2002

Scotland’s 60kg gold medal hope John Buchanan was a surprise casualty in the men’s judo on Tuesday afternoon.

Buchanan, a former British Open champion (1999) and bronze medallist at the 2001 World Championships, was widely expected to contest a podium place in his weight category.

The draw paired him with England’s Craig Fallon, the current British Open title holder. The Scot was unable to come to terms with his in-form rival and lost on points.

Fallon advanced the semi-final while Buchanan had a second chance to win a bronze medal by taking part in the repechage.

But the Scot surprisingly failed to overcome Jean Claude Cameroun of the Cameroons in the opening stage of the repechage and was knocked out of the competition.

“John just did not get going today,” said Colin McIver, chief executive of the Scottish Judo Federation. “I thought his first fight was particularly bad, and that was like the final as far as we were concerned.

“In the second fight he was unlucky and just got caught by a good technique from the Cameroonian.

“We’ve still got a number of strong fighters and a lot of medal hopes. But it’s a big blow for John.”
