Green blushes for Scotland

28†July†2002

Scots bow out in Heaton Park morning bowls session.

Not-so-hot Scots could not spoil the atmosphere at Heaton Park

Following an embarassing defeat against Brunei on Saturday, Scotland's men's fours have suffered another defeat against South Africa.

Scotland's Willie Wood said: "If we had won the game against Brunei on Saturday, it would have put a different slant on the game, and put pressure on South Africa.

"They are definitely in with a shout for the gold medal. The whole four played very well, and nothing seemed to go right for us,"

The loss, and Fijiís win over Brunei, leaves Scotland third, one point behind the Pacific nation, and therefore out of the running for the quarter-finals.

The South Africans dominated from the fourth end, when they piled on six shots to go ahead 8-3.

And in the last seven ends the Scots could only increase their score by one shot - scored in the 12th - as the South Africans scored in all but two of the last eight ends to win 19-7.

England menís fours need just one more win to secure a bronze medal after their 19-9 win over Australia.

The host foursome staged a late fightback in the last four ends after being down 15-5 in the 10th, but it was not enough, as England finished the match with a two-shot end for the win.

In the womenís fours, Canada kept their tournament hopes alive with a draw against Australia after trailing by seven shots in the ninth end.

The scores were tied at 12-12 after 13 ends, before Australia won the next by four shots. But the Canadians came back with four of their own to give them the draw and the point.
