South Africa and Australia are dumped out of the women's fours

The Australian women’s fours team were dumped out of the Commonwealth Games after they lost to England and group B opponents Canada beat Brunei at Heaton Park.

The host nation beat the Kuala Lumpur silver medallists 17-8 in a match where Aussie skip Jenny Harragon repeatedly misjudged the bumpy greens.

And Canada put on a great show of defensive bowls to dispatch Brunei 23-6 in their third match of the day under a hot sun. Brunei had drawn 18-18 with England earlier in the tournament.

In the quarter-finals, England and Canada joined Scotland and Wales who had secured their places earlier in the day.

In group A, Kuala Lumpur 1998 gold medallists South Africa failed to make it through to the last eight on shot difference after they were beaten by Malaysia 18-9.

The South Africans looked to be back in the game when trailing 15-9 because they had four shots on in the 14th end, but Malaysian skip Hasan Haslah blasted the jack out of the rink to force the replay.

They took the replayed 14th by two shots and added one more in the final end to finish 18-9.

Jersey are surprise quarter-finalists after they beat the Cook Islands 11-10. The Jersey Island foursome had made 11 shots by the 12th end, but the Cook Islands staged a late fightback to close the gap from four shots to one by the end of the match.

Jersey and Malaysia will be joined by New Zealand and Northern Ireland in the last eight.
