England's Melling off to poor wrestling start

02 August 2002

But India’s wrestlers started the 2002 Commonwealth Games by living up to high pre-tournament expectation.

Tuyy Amerjit Singh and Eric Ronald Kirschner

Both Ramesh Kumar, 66kg, and Anuj Kumar, 84kg, recorded impressive back-to-back wins in their opening matches to put themselves in the driving seat in their elimination pools while Krishan Kumar (55kg) also started well.

In the 66kg class, England’s biggest medal hope, John Melling, had an unconvincing start to Pool 1 as he lost his opening match to Canadian, Graham Ewers.

Melling now faces a challenge to qualify after Fred Jessey of Nigeria later defeated Ewers in the other pool match.

Highly-rated New Zealander Ricardo Aryan and Australia’s Len Zaslavsky are in firm control of pool 3 after recording comfortable victories over Stephane Le Roux of Namibia and Cypriot, Nicos Tziouvas respectively.

After one match each in the 55kg division, the impressive pair of Mikheil Japaridze of Canada and Jacob Isaac of Nigeria are leading the way in Pool 1 while Australia’s Farshad Tarash and Krishan Kumar of India have started well in pool 2.

England’s Jatinder Singh looks a good bet to advance from pool 4 in the 84kg, having opened the competition with a solid win over Malta’s Abraham Vassallo and then got the crowd to their feet with another fine performance against Badjie Hatabou of Gambia.

In the heavyweight 120kg category, Australia’s Iraq-born Mushtaq Abdullah lived up to his pre-competition billing with a spectacular early pin to see off the challenge of Sanneh Nuha of Gambia in pool 1.

In the difficult pool 2, England’s Amerjit Singh, was beaten by Canada’s Eric Kirschner.
